There was a hint of petulance in his tone, one that Faye was pretty sure that she could understand to an extent. Surely, he was from a world where things like fine dining or art were appreciated by the vast majority, but more than that, could be realized without much effort. Here, the opportunities for fine dining were slim at best— beef itself was even considered a fine commodity, and only made available from the very occasional presents from the island, which not everyone trusted. Shopping for clothing felt very much like reaching for rare finds from a thrift store, everything being stored in a shabby cardboard box with rounded edges.
Faye missed her own world as well, although surely not for the same reasons. It wasn't the opportunities for parties that she missed, nor even the fine dinners (although she had always liked being indulged now and again on that front), but instead the very lack of meaningful work. She didn't accomplish anything on the island. Didn't have a job, didn't need to get one.
So when she looked over, it was with that measurable amount of understanding, softening her gaze a touch. "I'd argue that the company's no different for our current environment, but who knows? I could be wrong," she replied quietly, with a small smile. "But New York, huh? I was born in Singapore, but spent more time on Mars than Earth."
